The project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and implemented by EvK2CNR Italy in partnership with UNDP, aims to increase the climate adaptation and resilience of Gilgit Baltistan Province- which is one of the most fragile in the country from an ecosystem perspective – in order to contribute to the promotion of sustainable and inclusive development in mountainous regions.

The project intends to

  • Improving water resources management and disaster risk management through monitoring activities of glaciers about climate change, collecting, processing and sharing data with local authorities, Environment Protection Authority and Disaster Management Authority and with local universities, Karakorum International University and University of Baltistan
  • Improving the quality management of agriculture and livestock by establishing phytopathology and zooprophylaxis laboratories aimed at promoting, in cooperation with the Dept. of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries sustainable agriculture and livestock practices.
  • Promoting sustainable tourism as a strategic sector for environmental conservation and job creation. The initiative will adopt a community-based and value-chain approach to contribute, in partnership with the GB Dept. of Tourism, to boost an inclusive and sustainable model of local development.
  • Enhancing the capacity of local governments and communities in sustainable management of natural resources and mountain ecosystems, through training and capacity-building activities, and awareness campaigns addressed to institutions, communities and the private sector.

Project Outcomes

  • Monitoring of glaciers and water resources is improved for drinking and agri food purposes. Outcome
  • Increased capacity for sustainable management of the agriculture and livestock value chain.
  • Criteria and best practices for sustainable tourism value chain management are introduced and adopted at the local level.
  • The capacities of local authorities and communities to implement policies and practices for the sustainable management of mountain ecosystems are strengthened.

Project Objective 

  • Promote sustainable development in the mountainous regions of northern Pakistan through enhanced adaptation capacity to climate change and improved conservation of ecosystems.
