EvK2CNR Contributes to the 79th WMO Executive Council

Geneva, 17 June 2025 – On the occasion of the 79th Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), held in Geneva from 16 to 20 June, Italy reaffirmed its commitment to scientific research and international cooperation with a workshop dedicated to the cryosphere of the "Third Pole."

The event, organized by the Italian Permanent Representative to the WMO, Brig. Gen. Luca Baione (Italian Air Force, Member of the WMO Executive Council – Region VI), brought together scientific and institutional experts to discuss the crucial role of atmospheric and glaciological observations in the Himalayan and Karakoram regions.

"The Cryosphere of the ‘Third Pole’: The Role of the Italian Cooperation in Aligning with WMO Priorities" was the title of the workshop held on Tuesday, 17 June 2025 at 6:00 PM in the Salle Obasi at the WMO headquarters in Geneva, featuring presentations by EvK2CNR researchers.

The session opened with institutional greetings from Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Brig. Gen. Luca Baione, Italian Air Force, Member of the WMO Executive Council – Region VI, and Prof. Cristina Biino, Science Attaché at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the International Organizations based in Geneva.

A Longstanding Scientific Commitment

Italy, through the collaboration between EvK2CNR, CNR, University of Milan, and Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, presented—thanks to high-level contributions—the monitoring activities conducted in the "Third Pole", a critical region for climate change research.

Research Stations: Pyramid and Spantik Labs

Angela Marinoni (EvK2CNR/CNR-ISAC) illustrated the scientific contribution of the Nepal Climate Observatory at Pyramid, a GAW (Global Atmosphere Watch) station located near Everest, which provides essential data on trace gases, aerosols, and meteorological parameters. She also announced the installation of a new autonomous monitoring system on the Chogo Lungma Glacier, as part of the Spantik Lab project, and the expansion of the Ice Memory project to the glaciers of the Third Pole, with the aim of preserving ice cores for paleoclimate studies.

30 Years of Glaciological Observations

Guglielmina Adele Diolaiuti (EvK2CNR/University of Milan) presented the remote and in situ monitoring activities carried out by EvK2CNR and its partners in the Himalayas and Karakoram, highlighting the importance of long-term data for understanding glacier dynamics and defining scientific protocols.

Ethics and Social Impact of Research

Alberto Pirni (EvK2CNR/Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies) addressed the topic of climate memory, offering a reflection on how scientific data can be translated into ethical awareness and collective action, especially in light of extreme glacier-related events.

The workshop confirmed Italy’s commitment to international scientific cooperation, in alignment with WMO priorities for climate monitoring and cryosphere preservation. EvK2CNR continues to play a key role in high-altitude research, contributing to the global understanding of climate change.

EvK2CNR, in collaboration with CNR, the University of Milan, and Sant’Anna School, thus reaffirms its role in climate excellence research and in cooperation with the WMO, contributing to global policies based on solid scientific data.
